Psoriatic arthritis causes pain in the joints, stiffness and swelling in people suffering from psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which causes the skin to be covered in patches of thick red inflamed silvery scales. It affects both sexes equally and most sufferers develop psoriatic arthritis followed by the arthritis symptoms.

The nature of symptoms for psoriatic arthritis depends on the type, but they are more or less similar to each other. Generally, patients will suffer pain, stiffness and tenderness at their joint areas in more than one place. Their range of motion is also significantly decreased and the pain amplifies when there are attempt to move the joints. The pain is significantly higher in the morning but subsides throughout the day.

There are 5 different types of psoriatic arthritis with each having their own unique symptoms:

1. Distal Interphalangeal Predominant

Patients will tend to feel tenderness and pain only in the last joints of their fingers and toes as only the distal interphalangeal joints are affected.

2. Asymmetrical Arthritis

Only 2 or 3 joints are affected and they are individual and not in pairs. Any joints in the body can feel pain and are often red and warm to touch.

3. Symmetrical Polyarthritis

Joint swelling in pairs is observed on both sides of the body, such as both elbows for example.

4. Spondylitis, or Psoriatic Spondyloarthritis

Joints in the spine will be inflamed and is a serious condition that will cause deformity and changes in the posture as well. Inflammation, tenderness and stiffness of the joints in both the back and neck will occur and the ligaments might be affected.

5. Arthritis MutilansThe bones and cartilage in the joints will be destroyed and deformed and flares in the skin will be observed. It will affect the small joints in the fingers and toes nearest to the nail and lower back and neck pain can be observed.

The symptoms vary according but the common signs and symptoms are:

- Uncomfortableness, inflexibility, tenderness and swelling in one or more joints.

- Range of motions in joints are greatly reduced.Re- Stiffness in the morning.- Lower back experiencing stiffness and inflammation.- Swelling in the smaller joints of the toes and fingers that are closest to the nail.- Pitting of nails.- Fingernails or toenails are detaching.- Tenderness, pain, or swelling where tendons and ligaments attach to the bone- Eye inflammation

Do not hesitate to seek for medical support if you believe you have contracted psoriatic arthritis. It is advisable to seek for professional treatment if the pain in your joints is giving you symptoms that can be interpreted into serious health issues.

Is henna a bad idea If you have RA (or other autoimmune diseases)? Does acupuncture help? Learn from my experiences. I’ve had RA for about 18 months, give or take a few. In that time, I experienced the lowest lows of RA, and climbing my way back up to full functionality. I’ve used methotrexate, plaquenil, humira, limited steroids, lots of Ibuprofen, and after one doctor suspected I have lupus, triggered by the Humira, I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands (no pun intended) and settled on a vegan diet for treatment. I only take plaquenil, Ibuprofen, and lots of vitamins and supplements. Now, I wake up with get-up-and-go, and I have the most daily energy I’ve had since before I met Arty. As with all AI diseases, it’s a day-to-day thing, with various set-backs, trial-and-error, and learning experiences. So watch the video for more info and feel free to ask me questions. Sorry about the poor quality–but it’s for the greater good. I also recommend drmcdougall.com. GOOD LUCK!

Question by dorsal: How do you to decrease/lessen Psoriasis scales?
I have been taking Fluocinonide (strongest), Methotrexate 15mg (week), cut out sugar, using Clove Oil (powerful antifungal) anti-fungal diet, increased water, Aquafor Ointment, coconut oil, infrared Sauna … amazingly, all this has apparently no effect on the skin scales. Which are extensive and continuously crumbling.

No more joint pain (Psoriatic Arthritis) since taking the Methotrexate, but NO improvement on the scales. I have been to 20-30 different doctors over the past decade, none have concluded anything, other than attempting to lessen the symptoms.

I know that steroid injections destroy the symptoms (temporarily) as does Sunlight exposure.

Has anyone found a way to eliminate these scales?

Best answer:

Answer by Bailey
I cleared my psoriasis with serenaskin herbal remedies. I used ointment and spray on the skin and scalp, and took anti-psoriasis extract internally. This treatment cleared my skin just in a couple of weeks. 6 mo later it is still clear. It is the best natural treatment I’ve ever tried.

Question by Everyman4himself: Ex-girlfriend had a child from cheating on me, possibly. My disease makes the news hurt.?
2 1/2 years ago, my relationship of three years, ended. After breaking up with her I began to have serious joint, and skin issues, I’m only 29 years old, but I struggle to walk. I have psoriatic arthritis, it’s potentially crippling and my future is uncertain.

Just found out my ex-girlfriend has a child of 2 years, did the math, there’s a good chance she cheated on me while we were together, and had that child (pretty sure it’s not mine for various reasons).

The last time I was able to walk without pain, and didn’t have to take heavy medication, was back when I was dating her. Her childbirth, highlights my inability to be intimate, and daily physical struggles. I miss being healthy. I don’t remember what it felt like to not be in pain.

Please give me some advice on how to deal with this news.

Best answer:

Answer by OMG
NO advice from me because it will be almost impossible for me to deal with something like that if my partner cheat me. I will be almost dead and hurt.

But it looks like you have already accepted that fact. Thats why you are not getting straight with her. But i think if you have this doubt than you should be clear about it as soon as possible otherwise it becomes more headache for you.

Try to ask her. and if she deny you can check it by DNA check. And if you find that out than you can end this relationship. Because to live with a vheater is more painful and wrong.

And about ailment, we all are human and can be in a situation bad or good in life but that doesnt mean that we have to take more wrong from others too.

Question by dorsal: What to do about anti-adderall doctors?
I was diagnosed ADD when I was 5 years old and my parents declined medication. About 25 years later, I discovered I did in fact have it very badly. A psychiatrist prescribed a low dose of Adderall. The benefits were immediate and significant, primarily due to the newly gained ability of rationalization. My life, which had been an impoverished, confusing, anxiety-ridden mess, became organized. My standards went up, and my salary increased by about 600%. I currently am in my longest relationship thus far.

Before the medication I was renting a couch for $ 100 a month in the slums of Chicago, subsisting on food stamps.

The medication had made a connection in my brain which allowed me to use intelligence, perform tasks and not daydream endlessly.

At any case, my psychiatrist was suddenly replaced with a new, young psychiatrist who immediately moved to stop the Adderall at once and prescribed instead Welbutrin.

I declined the Welbutrin and attempted to switch to a different psychiatrist. Then I changed my diet drastically which resulted in the complete remission of a long-standing auto-immune disease (Psoriatic Arthritis).

My primary care doctor became suspicious at this point, and asked me if I thought I had magic powers. She then informed me that she would no longer be prescribing me Adderall because it was harming me.

The psychiatrist also refused to prescribe the drug based on the remarks by the primary care doctor. I then requested to switch my primary care doctor. They then added ‘delusions of persecution’ to my file.

I’m 100% aware of what Adderall psychosis symptoms are and I have none of them. My grandmother took Dexedrine her entire life and is a healthy and sharp 83 year old.

I am not sure what to do at this point, since it does actually seem like a witch-hunt. And for that matter, why would these doctors (who are both under 30 I might add) want to try so hard to stop a therapy which has yielded so many obvious benefits to the patient?

More importantly what are my rights? What can I do?

If a person experiences muscle pain and it continues for more than two to three days, there is a strong chance that he or she is suffering from arthritis. This chronic disease is a very common disorder, one that affects lots of people all around the world. The major symptom of arthritis is pain in the bone joints, but some arthritis sufferers may also feel pain in certain organs in the body.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Without a thorough examination the doctor will not be able to find which type of arthritis you are suffering from. Arthritis can stem from injuries and strains caused by sports, repetitive motion, overexertion etc.

Osteoarthritis or the degenerative joint disease is the most common. The basic cause of osteoarthritis is due to infection to the joint, trauma or age. Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and septic arthritis are other common types.

Correct management of the disease is vital. Obviously, in order to treat the disease, doctors need to ascertain that symptoms are, in fact, those of osteoarthritis and not some other illness. In order to diagnose osteoarthritis, as there is no simple test which indicates the presence of the disease, doctors usually carry out several tests.

These include a clinical history of the patient, a physical examination, X-rays and often MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. If the test results prove positive, the doctor will then embark on a program of pain management. This will vary from person to person, depending on the severity of the pain.

There are many types of treatment for arthritis but prevention is always better than cure. Eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight, using joint protecting devices during heavy work / exercises etc. can help prevent arthritis.

Question by luvkolin: I have severe joint pain and also tiny pits in my fingernails. Is it psoriasis?
I’ve had joint pain my entire life. Im now almost 29. it started with knee and ankle pain and now is more painful and effects my shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. I recently started to go to a specialist to find out whats going on. the first one did blood work and something came back positive so she referred me to an arthritis specialist. He basically told me he is sure I have Psoriatic arthritis. he noticed i have tiny lil pits in my fingernails( looks like they’ve been poked with a sewing needle) and right away made th assumption that i have psoriasis. i have never had any of the skin rashes or other symptoms of psoriasis. i find it strange and am very sceptical of this assumption. any and all info shared would be greatly appreciated!! thank u

Best answer:

Answer by Starlight
Approximately 15% of Psoriatic Arthritis sufferers develop the arthritis before the skin psoriasis. Is there any history of psoriasis or eczema in your family? You have all the classic signs of PsA.

The treatment of arthritis is very dependent on the precise type of arthritis present. An accurate diagnosis increases the chances for successful treatment. Treatments available include physical therapy, splinting, cold pack application, paraffin wax dips, antiinflammation medications, immune-altering medications, and surgical operations.

What is the national financial impact of arthritis?

It has been estimated that the total cost of the arthritis bill for the United States, in terms of hospitalization, doctor visits, medications, physical therapies, nursing-home care, lost wages, early death, and family discord is over billion dollars annually.

This does not include the nearly billion spent each year in the United States on unproven remedies by patients addressing their symptoms on their own.

What is a rheumatologist?

A rheumatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the nonsurgical treatment of rheumatic illnesses, especially arthritis.

Rheumatologists have special interests in unexplained rash, fever, arthritis, anemia, weakness, weight loss, fatigue, joint or muscle pain, autoimmune disease, and anorexia. They often serve as consultants, acting like medical detectives at the request of other doctors.

Rheumatologists have particular skills in the evaluation of the over 100 forms of arthritis and have special interests in rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, Still’s disease, dermatomyositis, Sjogren’s syndrome, vasculitis, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, sarcoidosis, Lyme disease, osteomyelitis, osteoarthritis, back pain, gout, pseudogout, relapsing polychondritis, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, serum sickness, reactive arthritis, Kawasaki disease, fibromyalgia, erythromelalgia, Raynaud’s disease, growing pains, iritis, osteoporosis, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and others.

Classical adult rheumatology training includes four years of medical school, one year of internship in internal medicine, two years of internal-medicine residency, and two years of rheumatology fellowship. There is a subspecialty board for rheumatology certification, offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which can provide board certification to approved rheumatologists.

Pediatric rheumatologists are physicians who specialize in providing comprehensive care to children (as well as their families) with rheumatic diseases, especially arthritis.

Pediatric rheumatologists are pediatricians who have completed an additional two to three years of specialized training in pediatric rheumatology and are usually board-certified in pediatric rheumatology.

Article by Jayne Anne Yelpreis

It is a common misconception that one cannot develop rheumatoid arthritis until they are old and have lived a physically demanding lifestyle. The truth is, RA can begin to appear in nearly anyone that does not practice a healthy routine and take care of the joints they use on a daily basis.

Check with your doctor before starting a vitamin regimen. There are multiple conflicting studies associated with different vitamins, so you want to make sure you are taking the ones that will be most beneficial to you. Your doctor will be able to tell you which vitamins are best for your body, as well as how often you should take them.

You may want to consider using fish oil if you suffer from arthritis. It has been medically proven that the omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish oil can reduce joint inflammation and pain. Fish oil can be found in some supermarkets as well as vitamin and supplement stores.

Try changing your diet to vegetarian or vegan, to help with arthritis pain. Many vegetarians and vegans have reported that this diet improves arthritis symptoms such as morning stiffness, grip strength, and pain. It is believed that the antioxidants found in green vegetables protects against the pain of arthritis.

A healthy diet is a key factor in fighting psoriatic arthritis. Make sure to never skip your meals. Keep your diet a healthy mix of proteins, complex carbs, and unsaturated fats to help your body have enough energy to get through the day. A healthy diet will go a long way towards fighting fatigue, which can aggrevate your arthritis.

Beating the fatigue associated with rheumatoid arthritis isn’t easy, but there are ways to keep it under control. For example, stick to a schedule every day – even on the weekend – as to when you go to bed and when you get up in the morning. This will help insure you get a good night’s sleep every day.

If you suffer from arthritis, consider taking a yoga class to boost your overall health and well-being. Yoga involves a combination of stretching and calming your mind, both of which can be beneficial for anyone coping with arthritis. If you are not comfortable joining a class, consider buying a yoga workout DVD instead. Working out along with a DVD allows you to get the same benefit without having to leave the comfort of your home.

You should take vitamins, in addition to your diet. Vitamin E can help with arthritis by reducing the damage to the joints. However, taking vitamins on a daily basis can have some side effects. You should check with your doctor and make sure you are taking the right kind of vitamins.

Double check with your doctor or pharmacist to find out if any of the arthritis drugs you’re taking have adverse reactions with food or other drugs. For example, many prescriptions become longer lasting in the blood stream if you ingest grapefruit, leading to higher levels of the medicine in your body than your doctor prescribed.

As you may now be aware, there are many things that the average person can do to help alleviate their arthritis pain and suffering. Though it may seem debilitating now, by following the tips and advice from this article, you will help increase your chances of living a full and unencumbered life with arthritis.

Yoga is an ideal exercise for arthritis sufferers. Many studies indicate enormous benefits can be garnered from yoga, including easing the joint pain associated with arthritis.

Get enough calcium to lower the risk of osteoarthritis so you can prevent bone loss. There are a number of sources of calcium such as dairy products. If you are not a fan of dairy products, you can add some powered milk to all sorts of dishes or take a calcium supplement.

The sooner you start treating your acute arthritis, the better. While no cure is available for arthritis, the sooner you begin treatment, the sooner you can decrease your pain. You will want to see your doctor and take all medications that are prescribed to you.

Make stretching a part of your daily routine. If you do not have any pain, stretch once per day. Your physician makes a fine source of guidance if you need help putting together a stretching program that works for you. To get ready for the day, first take a warm shower and then do a few stretches.

Listening to your body is key when exercising to alleviate yourself from arthritis symptoms. Do it slowly to respect your body. If pain or new symptoms crop up and last for several days, you should speak with your doctor about this problem.

Schedule time to do regular research about managing arthritis. Look up more information online, or subscribe to newsletters and magazines.

Arthritis can be relieved tremendously simply by shedding unwanted pounds. Being overweight causes the joints in the body to be more stressed, which would lead to arthritis related pain to be worse and happen more often. The weight loss process also causes the body not to produce harmful chemicals that can aggravate arthritis.

Do not overexert yourself if you suffer from Psoriatic Arthritis. You may find that you don’t have the stamina that you used to have. If you attempt to pretend that things are the same as they were, you will just create more issues for yourself. Instead, try to focus the energy that you have on what you value the most. Do not fall into the false belief that you must do all of the activities which you once did.

There are different treatments for just about every form of arthritis, and finding the method that will give you the best relief can be difficult, and take some time. Fortunately, advice like this exists which can provide a basic understanding of arthritis pain and relief. If you apply what you learn here you’ll be able to find quick relief from your symptoms.

The term arthritis refers to the inflammation or swelling of any joint or joints in our bodies. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis that affects the joints as well as other parts of the body. It is considered as one of the most common long term (chronic) disorders and also one of the most common causes of disability. About 46 million American adults have been reported to be suffering from some form of arthritis. Annually, about 19 million individuals suffer from limitations in physical activity due to arthritis.

Causes and Risk Factors

Human joints are covered and defended by several tissue types, all of which ensure its smooth functioning. Among these, the one known as cartilage, covers the joint surfaces and helps in smooth movement of the joint. Any abnormality or condition that affects the health of these tissues can result in arthritis.

Some of the most common factors associated with inflammation of the joints include:

-Presence of autoimmune disorders (a condition where our body’s immune/defense system attacks healthy cells instead of diseased ones)-Bone fractures-”Wear and tear” of the joints, because of age or overuse (as in athletes)-Bacterial or viral infections

These factors cause progressive damage to the cartilage and other tissues of the joint resulting in arthritis if not identified and treated/corrected early.

Types

As mentioned earlier, there are 100+ types of arthritis. These are generally associated with some underlying disorder that would have initiated the changes. A few of the major types of arthritis include the following:

-Osteoarthritis – most common type-Ankylosing spondylitis-Gout-Gonococcal arthritis-Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (arthritis noted mostly in children)-Rheumatoid arthritis (noted only in adults)-Nongonococcal bacterial arthritis (arthritis associated with bacterial infections)-Psoriatic arthritis (associated with a skin disorder known as psoriasis)-Reactive arthritis (commonly noted in a condition called Reiter syndrome)-Arthritis associated with scleroderma-Arthritis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Symptoms and Signs

Arthritis is usually associated with pain, inflammation, stiffness, and limited movement in affected joints. In some cases, warmth and redness around the joint may also be noted. The severity of the symptoms and signs may vary with the type and severity of arthritis. Other symptoms that may be specific to the underlying cause can also be present.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of arthritis is based on the signs and symptoms reported, and certain diagnostic procedures such as physical examination and imaging studies. The doctor will examine the affected joint and check for restricted movements. Additionally, the presence of swelling and redness in the joints is also evaluated. Imaging studies which can include x-rays, CT and MRI scans, can help identify the amount of damage, and also verify the underlying cause of arthritis.Laboratory evaluation of the fluid sample taken from the joint and blood tests (done specifically in cases of moderate to large swelling) are also advised.

Treatment

The treatment of arthritis may be individualized based on the underlying cause. Nevertheless, certain treatment approaches are common in all cases of arthritis. The aim of such treatment is to reduce the pain, improve the functioning of the affected joint(s) and to prevent further damage.

Some of the treatment approaches include:

-Physical therapy – adequate rest with ice or heat application to the affected joints provides relief. Splints or other devices to support the joints may also be indicated. Exercise helps in mobilizing the joints, and improves flexibility and strength of the joints.-Lifestyle modifications – get enough sleep, avoid standing in the same position for long durations, have a healthy diet, and lose weight if you are overweight.-Medications – medications to relieve inflammation and pain may be advised if sufficient relief is not obtained with physical therapy and lifestyle modifications-Surgery – may be advised in cases where the joint has undergone considerable amount of damage

Outcome and Prevention

Arthritis pain can be relieved in most individuals; however, it may relapse and may require to be treated again. Lifestyle modifications as mentioned before can help in preventing arthritis associated with age and overuse.

Article by Nathan Wei

Psoriatic arthritis (PSa) is one of the most common forms of inflammatory arthritis with prevalence varying in the general population from 0.3% to 1%. It is unique in that the immune abnormality underlying the condition affects both the skin as well as the joints.

While psoriatic arthritis may begin by attacking only a few joints, over time it may begin to involve many joints and becomes very severe in at least 20% of patients.

Treatment should target the skin and joint problems of the disease simultaneously.

Successful treatment of PsA with conventional therapies is limited by a number of different factors, including failure to effectively manage skin and joint aspects of the disease, risk of potentially serious adverse effects, and poor tolerability.

The usual starting regimen given to patients with PsA is non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

While initial treatment with NSAIDs may control PsA, some patients may experience a worsening of psoriasis and others may not respond well enough.

In addition, NSAIDs do not slow down the course of the disease or prevent development or progression of erosions (joint damage).

Psoralen plus ultraviolet light (PUVA) and other medications may be effective therapies for psoriasis, but they do not halt progressive joint damage and deterioration in patients with PsA.

Usually, patients with severe PsA are placed on disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS). These drugs work slowly to retard the progression of disease.

Data from clinical trials support the use of sulfasalazine for PsA. However, a large percentage of patients (approximately 40 % or higher) either do not tolerate the drug or develop side effects.

Methotrexate (MTX) may be a useful drug in PsA patients. The major concern with this drug is potential liver toxicity.

In addition to periodic (monthly) liver function tests, a complete blood cell count and kidney function tests should be obtained during therapy.

Patients with psoriasis receiving MTX appear to be at slightly higher risk for liver disease compared with patients with RA who take the drug. The role of liver biopsy in monitoring is still undecided.

Another drug that has been used is cyclosporine A. While effective, it has many serious toxicities including kidney damage and hypertension.

All of these drugs, in addition to their toxicities, have limited effectiveness in patients who have spinal involvement from their psoriatic arthritis.

Currently, it is felt that institution of drugs that inhibit tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is the recommended course of action to follow. TNF is a chemical messenger that initiates and perpetuates inflammation and destruction in arthritis.

There are three TNF inhibitors that are currently used for psoriatic arthritis. They include etanercept (Enbrel), infliximab (Remicade), and adalimumab (Humira). All three drugs work well for both the rash as well as the joints. Enbrel and Humira are self-administered while Remicade is given by intravenous infusion. These drugs also appear to be effective for the spinal manifestations of psoriatic arthritis.

Other drugs such as rituximab (Rituxan) and abatacept (Orencia) are also being studied for use in psoriatic arthritis.

Patients with painful swollen joints may require intraarticular joint injections with glucocorticoids (“cortisone”)
