Arthritis and Psoriasis

Psoriatic skin disease is a relatively common condition for which the treatments are somewhat unpleasant and not entirely effective. It is known that an arthritic syndrome is associated with this skin disorder but even then the diagnosis may be missed when patients with psoriasis present with joint signs. There are many effects from psoriatic arthritis on the joints and the arthritic damage can lead to disability and compromised quality of life. In the United Kingdom the prevalence of psoriasis itself is around 2%, with 14% of this number exhibiting some signs of involvement in their joints.

The symptoms of joint involvement can be present in about 15 percent of people before any of the skin changes become obvious and ultrasound of tendons in people with psoriasis have shown abnormalities without any joint symptoms. A lesser number of joints are typically affected in psoriatic in comparison to rheumatoid arthritis although they may be affected in a similar arrangement, with in some instances only one or two joints affected. The entheses, the areas where the ligaments and tendons are attached to the bones, are typically affected with pain and inflammation. The attachment of the Achilles tendon to the heel bone is a good example.

Psoriatic arthritis has often been misdiagnosed as Leprosy for centuries, and it’s only by chance in the last few decades that modern day advancements are being made in understanding and treating this chronic disease. Psoriatic arthritis is a long term, chronic, progressive disease that creates swollen tender joints, as well as changes in the nails, from nail holes to yellowing of the nails and thickening of the nails. Often the symptoms can be seen as scaly, raised red skin. Also, a redness and tenderness in the eye are common symptoms. Most commonly, a swelling in the hands or ankle feet, neck or back and knees is shown by psoriatic arthritis. Patients can experience stiff joints in the morning, after an activity or getting up after a rest. It could be mild or it could be severe, depending on the patients. If it’s mild, it may not be diagnosed for years and maybe people will not even think about it twice. But in the more severe cases, it can create very painful arthritic joints, eventually deforming the joints. These can occur quite often in young patients and female patients. The majority of patients will usually develop psoriatic arthritis from the ages of twenty to fifty and it is also uncommon in children.

There are modern day ways of treating this chronic disease and with modern day diagnosis, there are a number of treatments that can be applied. But an early diagnosis needs to be found in order to formulate the right sort of treatment, for the right type of psoriasis. As there are many types and forms psoriasis, it has to be diagnosed correctly. It could be confused with a number of other types of psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis belongs to a group of conditions called seronegative spondylarthropathies. This group has a number of features including, arthritis in the spine or the extremities, two, the inflammation and swelling of joints, ligaments and tendons, three, the inflammation and redness in the eye and four, a family history of psoriasis.
